When I hold a brand-new edition of a Bärenreiter score in my hands with its reassuringly bold colours, there is a thrill of anticipatory and sensory pleasure – the treasure trove of information to be mined, and the quality of the paper to the touch. The Beethoven cello sonatas are peerless and intelligently musical in their editorial interventions.
